Honda Cars India recently flew us to Japan for the Japan Mobility Show 2025 and an exclusive track session at the Tochigi Proving Ground. While Honda showcased its future hybrid and EV roadmap for India, the real star of the trip was the car waiting for us on the test track — the 2026 Honda Prelude.
A revival of one of Honda’s most celebrated nameplates, the new Prelude blends hybrid performance, Civic Type R engineering, and grand touring comfort in a coupe that signals Honda’s return to emotional, driver-focused cars.
A Legendary Name Reinvented
Originally launched in 1978, the Prelude became a symbol of style and precision. The 2026 model continues that spirit, reimagined as a performance hybrid grand tourer. Honda positions it as a “Grand Touring Sports Coupe,” offering a balance of driving excitement, efficiency, and long-distance comfort.
This is not a retro reboot — it is a modern halo car designed to showcase Honda’s engineering in the electrified era.
Hybrid Power, Performance Focus
On the Tochigi track, the Prelude impressed immediately with its smooth power delivery and balanced handling. The car uses a 2.0-litre Atkinson-cycle petrol engine paired with a two-motor hybrid system that develops 200hp and 315Nm.
Despite modest numbers on paper, on track the Prelude feels responsive and lively:
- Immediate electric torque out of corners
- Strong mid-range acceleration
- Linear, turbo-lag-free power delivery
A new S+ Shift mode simulates crisp gear changes, complete with rev-matching and a sportier sound profile. The result is a hybrid that behaves like a tightly geared sports coupe.
Civic Type R Underpinnings Add Precision
Honda’s biggest engineering leap is combining hybrid tech with the Civic Type R’s performance hardware:
- Dual-axis strut front suspension
- Retuned adaptive dampers
- Brembo four-piston brakes
- 19-inch performance tyres
This gives the Prelude sharp turn-in, excellent grip, and a playful, communicative steering feel. On slalom tests, it sliced through cones with hot-hatch agility while maintaining the composure of a grand tourer.
A Dual-Purpose GT Coupe
Switch to Comfort or GT mode and the Prelude softens noticeably. Ride quality becomes smooth, body control relaxes, and the coupe settles into long-distance cruising with ease. The hybrid transitions between electric and petrol power seamlessly, enhancing refinement.
It’s very much two cars in one: a spirited performance coupe and a relaxed highway grand tourer.
Interior: Sporty, Clean, Premium
The cabin blends Honda’s clean design approach with sporty details. Highlights include:
- Integrated headrest sport seats with houndstooth pattern
- Flat-bottom steering wheel with metal paddles
- 10.2-inch digital cluster + 9-inch infotainment with Google built-in
- Blue accent stitching and colour-matched brake calipers
- 2+2 seating layout
The design feels focused, elegant, and unmistakably premium.
Exterior Design: Low, Wide, and Modern
In person, the Prelude has a strong visual presence. Its long bonnet, double-bubble roof, wide stance, and minimalistic surfacing give it a purposeful look. LED signature lighting and flush door handles add a futuristic touch.
Honda describes the design language as “simple, aerodynamic, and functional.”
Will It Come to India?
Honda has not confirmed an India launch, but senior executives hinted that the Prelude is under evaluation. A limited introduction is possible if import-friendly hybrid/EV policies are finalised.
If launched, it would act as Honda’s halo model — elevating brand appeal and drawing enthusiasts back to the brand.
