Tesla is making a smarter push into India with a more practical version of its popular electric SUV — the Model Y Long-Wheelbase (LWB). Designed with families in mind, this new variant adds more space, more seats, and better comfort to suit Indian preferences.
Launched at ₹61.99 lakh (ex-showroom), the Model Y LWB fits neatly between Tesla’s existing rear-wheel-drive and long-range versions. The biggest highlight is its 3-row, 6-seater layout. Unlike the standard model, this version gets a 2+2+2 seating setup with captain seats in the second row — a feature that many premium SUV buyers in India appreciate for added comfort.
The SUV is imported from Tesla’s Shanghai facility and offers a claimed driving range of up to 681 km (WLTP). This long range makes it practical not just for daily commutes, but also for highway trips — something Indian EV buyers often worry about.
Tesla’s move comes at a time when its India journey has been slow. High import duties, ranging from 70% to 100%, have kept prices high and sales limited. In fact, only a few hundred Model Y units have been sold in the country so far.
With this long-wheelbase version, Tesla is clearly trying to change that. By offering more space and a family-friendly layout, the brand is targeting buyers who might otherwise consider traditional luxury SUVs.
Overall, the Model Y LWB feels like a step in the right direction. It blends Tesla’s electric performance with the practicality Indian families look for. Whether it boosts sales significantly is still uncertain, but it does make Tesla a more relevant option for a wider set of buyers in India.
