Tata Motors is actively exploring the possibility of introducing CNG and strong hybrid powertrains for its vehicles measuring over 4 metres in length, according to a report from Autocar Professional. At present, Tata offers CNG only in its sub-4m models—the Tiago, Tigor, Punch, and Nexon—and does not have a single hybrid model in its portfolio. With this new direction, the bigger Tata SUVs such as the Curvv, Harrier, Safari, and the soon-to-launch Sierra could be the next to receive these alternative powertrain options.
Growing Demand for CNG and Tata’s Updated Strategy
Tata Motors sold over 1.2 lakh CNG cars in 2024, and the number is expected to climb to 1.5 lakh units by the end of the current year. The company’s diversification into cleaner and more efficient powertrains comes ahead of the stricter CAFE 3 emission norms set to take effect in 2027. Additionally, rising petrol prices and a declining interest in diesel vehicles are prompting buyers to look toward alternative fuels like CNG and hybrids.
Industry data for FY2025 shows the following powertrain-wise growth rates:
- CNG: 35% growth
- Hybrid: 15.4% growth
- Electric: 15% growth
These figures highlight the growing relevance of alternative fuel options and reinforce Tata’s need to broaden its powertrain strategy for mainstream segments.

CNG & Hybrid Plans Under Evaluation
All Tata vehicles over 4 metres belong to the SUV category—those over 4.3 metres (Curvv and the upcoming Sierra) and those over 4.6 metres (Harrier and Safari). During Tata’s Q2 FY26 earnings call, Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director of Tata Passenger Vehicles and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility, shared insights into the company’s direction:
“We are… very closely watching the 4.3-metre segment. If we see demand there, we might extend our portfolio of CNG offerings in that segment as well.”
Although Tata has not provided concrete details yet, the Tata Curvv stands out as a strong candidate for a CNG variant. Since it shares its 1.2-litre, three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine with the Nexon, it could adopt the Nexon’s innovative twin-cylinder CNG setup. Notably, Tata is the only manufacturer offering a turbo-petrol + CNG combination in India today.
