Vietnamese EV maker VinFast has patented its VF 9 seven-seat electric SUV in Australia, sparking speculation about its India launch. Already on sale in Vietnam and the U.S., the VF 9 is set for a 2026 model year (MY26) update with more range and luxury.
Design and Dimensions
At 5.1m long, 2.2m wide, and 1.7m tall, the VF 9 is larger than the Kia EV9. It features a 3.14m wheelbase, flush door handles, body-coloured wheel claddings, dual-tone alloys, and a black roof for a sporty yet sophisticated look.
Interior and Equipment
The VF 9 is generously equipped with vegan leather upholstery, 12-way driver’s seat, heated and ventilated seats, massaging functions, and a 15.6-inch infotainment system with head-up display.
Additional features include three-zone climate control, 13-speaker audio, wireless charging, and a 75L frunk.
Battery, Power, and Performance
The VF 9 uses a 123kWh battery and dual-motor AWD setup, delivering 300kW (402bhp) and 620Nm of torque. It can sprint from 0–100kmph in 6.6 seconds and offers an estimated 600km range.
By contrast, the Kia EV9 uses a 99.8kWh battery and produces 283kW/700Nm, good for 561km of range and a quicker 5.3s 0–100kmph.
Pricing and India Potential
Priced at around ₹50.5 lakh in Vietnam, the VF 9 undercuts the Kia EV9 (₹1.3 crore in India) by a wide margin. Even with local assembly and import costs, VinFast could price the VF 9 below ₹1 crore in India.
The Australian RHD patent strengthens the case for an Indian debut, since both markets share right-hand-drive setups. With a Thoothukudi (Tamil Nadu) assembly plant under development, VinFast could bring the VF 9 here via CKD assembly.
Verdict
Combining luxury, range, and affordability, the VinFast VF 9 could shake up India’s premium EV market. Given the brand’s aggressive expansion and multiple India-focused patents, its arrival here seems not just possible — but likely.
