JSW MG Motor India and Skoda Auto Volkswagen India (SAVWIPL) are in early exploratory discussions for a potential partnership involving shared platforms, powertrains and technologies. These conversations are in the preliminary stage and are not yet formal negotiations.
Why the Partnership Is Being Explored
Skoda-VW has been seeking an Indian partner for over a year to support localisation, reduce future development costs and build scale for its new India-focused platform. The Volkswagen Group plans to invest about €1 billion in next-generation hybrid and EV architectures and requires strong production volumes to justify the investment.
JSW Group previously engaged Skoda-VW in collaborative discussions, and both companies are now revisiting possible alignment opportunities.
Three-Way Structure Being Studied
One model under evaluation includes a combined partnership between JSW, SAIC (MG’s parent company) and Skoda-VW. SAIC and Volkswagen already share a longstanding joint venture in China, making tech and platform sharing more feasible.
Sources indicate SAIC is open to a stable collaborative structure in India, especially given regulatory, localisation and geopolitical challenges.
JSW–Chery Talks Hit Roadblocks
In parallel, JSW Auto’s separate partnership discussions with Chery are facing complications over data access and technology transfer terms. JSW plans to launch a new EV brand in 2027–28 based on Chery platforms, but negotiations have slowed.
A Potentially Unique Alliance
If JSW–MG–SAIC and Skoda-VW progress toward a combined partnership, it could create an unprecedented alliance in India, blending:
- European engineering strength
- Chinese EV and battery expertise
- Indian manufacturing scale
Such a collaboration could significantly reshape India’s EV and hybrid development landscape in the coming years.
