Audi Makes F1 Debut with R26 Ahead of the 2026 Season

Audi has officially made its long-awaited entry into Formula 1 with the unveiling of the R26, its challenger for the 2026 season. The reveal took place at Kraftwerk Berlin and marked a major milestone for the German manufacturer as it prepares to compete as a full works team on the F1 grid.

The R26 represents Audi’s transformation of the Sauber outfit into a factory-backed operation. The car features a striking Titanium, black and Lava Red livery, with the iconic Audi rings clearly visible across the bodywork. Exposed carbon fibre elements underline the car’s technical focus, while the overall design has been developed specifically around the new 2026 aerodynamic and power unit regulations that will reshape the sport.

Although the version shown is an early iteration, Audi has already begun on-track work. The R26 completed a preliminary shakedown in Barcelona in early January, allowing engineers to collect initial data and begin refining the new power unit and systems ahead of pre-season testing.

Audi has confirmed Nico Hülkenberg and Gabriel Bortoleto as its driver lineup, combining experience with young talent for its first Formula 1 campaign. The team will be led by Team Principal Jonathan Wheatley, with day-to-day operations continuing from Hinwil, Switzerland, the long-time base of the Sauber organisation.

Off the track, Audi has also partnered with Adidas to create a bespoke range of race and teamwear, further strengthening the brand’s identity as it enters Formula 1. While immediate championship success is not being promised, Audi has outlined a clear long-term vision. The R26 is only the beginning of a carefully planned project, with the ultimate aim of becoming a consistent title contender by 2030.
