Honda is gearing up for a major product resurgence in India, with a new sub-4-metre compact SUV expected to take centre stage. Taking advantage of the revised GST structure that favours smaller cars, the Japanese automaker aims to strengthen its mass-market presence in one of the world’s fastest-growing auto markets.

Honda’s Comeback in the Volume Segment
Currently, Honda’s only sub-4m offering in India is the Amaze compact sedan. The brand once had a broader lineup with the Brio, Jazz, and WR-V — all now discontinued.
With compact SUVs like the Tata Nexon, Maruti Brezza, Hyundai Venue, and Mahindra XUV 3XO dominating sales, Honda is reportedly working on re-entering this lucrative space. However, insiders suggest the project is still in early stages, with pricing and cost optimisation being key challenges.

Why the Compact SUV Matters
The sub-4m SUV segment is India’s largest and fastest-growing category, driving massive sales for several automakers. Honda, once strong in premium and compact cars, has seen its market share drop due to a limited SUV lineup.
At present, Honda’s portfolio includes only City, Elevate, and Amaze, while competitors like Maruti, Hyundai, Tata, Kia, and Toyota have diversified with SUVs, hybrids, and EVs. With sedans declining in popularity, a compact SUV could help revive Honda’s competitive edge in India.
Honda’s Future Strategy
At the Japan Mobility Show 2025, Honda revealed plans to launch 10 new models in India by 2030, including seven SUVs and several hybrid and electric vehicles. The company also showcased the Honda 0 Series Alpha EV Concept, slated for an India debut in 2027 — marking a key step in its electrification roadmap.

Honda CEO Toshihiro Mibe said,
“India is a key market for Honda. Electrification is our focus, and we’re developing products tailored specifically for Indian consumers.”
What to Expect
If confirmed, Honda’s new compact SUV is likely to feature:
- Advanced hybrid powertrain
- Aggressive pricing for mass-market appeal
- High localisation for cost control
- A modern, global design language
If finalised, this new model could become Honda’s most important India-focused launch since the Amaze, marking a fresh start in the country’s competitive SUV market.
