The Maruti Suzuki Jimny 5-door has achieved a major global milestone, crossing 1 lakh units in exports since production began in India. The compact 4×4 has won over customers in more than 100 countries, highlighting the international appeal of this rugged SUV.
Top export markets include Japan, Mexico, Australia, South Africa, and Chile, with Japan proving especially enthusiastic. Launched as the Jimny Nomade in January 2025, the SUV garnered over 50,000 orders within days, reflecting its immense popularity in one of the world’s most discerning markets.
Despite its overseas success, domestic sales have lagged significantly. Since its launch in India on July 7, 2023, the Jimny 5-door has sold just 27,812 units, representing less than 30% of its export volume. September 2025 alone saw only 296 units sold, down from 599 units the previous year.
The Jimny’s hardcore 4×4 design and off-road capabilities appeal to a niche Indian audience, while urban buyers often seek fuel-efficient, everyday-friendly vehicles. In real-world tests, the manual and automatic variants deliver 12.8kpl and 11.8kpl, respectively, which falls short of typical Maruti expectations.
The contrast is stark: a vehicle celebrated globally for its ruggedness and character continues to struggle for mainstream acceptance in the country where it is built.
